Suicide Help Intervention through Education & Leadership Development for Students (S.H.I.E.L.D.S.) is leadership training programme that aims to strengthen peer support for students in distress or crisis through empowering selected students to become proactive gatekeepers and nurture leaders in mental health promotion and suicide prevention in the school community, under the support of the Mental Health Initiatives Funding Scheme. <\/span><\/span>Under <\/span><\/span>the <\/span>guidance <\/span>of the CSRP team<\/span> and <\/span>assistance of university <\/span>student mentors<\/span>, a<\/span>n<\/span> <\/span>inter-school <\/span>student workshop <\/span>and day camp <\/span>were<\/span> successfully <\/span>held <\/span>on 6<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> <\/span>June<\/span> and 27<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> July<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>S<\/span>t<\/span>ud<\/span>ents<\/span> <\/span>were <\/span>engaged in an interactive <\/span>seminar and activities <\/span>that covered mental health issues, recognizing signs of distress<\/span>,<\/span> the do\u2019s and don\u2019ts about<\/span> peer support<\/span>ing<\/span>, crisis assessment and <\/span>referral <\/span>protocols<\/span>.<\/span> B<\/span>efore <\/span>participating <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>workshop and day camp, students <\/span>were <\/span>worried about their ability to <\/span>provide helpful responses <\/span>to peers in distress<\/span> and they wished <\/span>to learn more about<\/span> mental health <\/span>in order to be <\/span>a competent gatekeeper<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According to our feedback, almost <\/span>90% of students found that the workshop and day camp <\/span>enhanced their abilities to give <\/span>appropriate assessment and response to peers in distress<\/span>, proving that the program had been <\/span>a great learning experience<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>“I learnt a lot about handling and responding to the emotion of others and myself from the activities!”<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

“The thing I received most clarity and enlightenment about is to care for myself before helping others and not to put the burden of helping others onto me and myself only!”<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
